'El Chapo' Guzman's son said to have tweeted out his location
Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that’s taken over our lives.
They think they know so much more about technology than do adults. This may be true. What we (and they) forget is that the technology they believe is de rigueur might expose more than some would wish.
This is especially true if you’re one of the most wanted people in the world.
The head of the Sinaloa drug cartel, Joaquín Archivaldo Guzman Loera, known as “El Chapo” Guzman, is on the run after escaping in July through tunnels beneath the Mexican prison in which he was held.
The tweet included a picture of Guzman Jr. with what may have been his dad. The message roughly translated to: “Satisfied here, you already know with whom.”
Family reunions are indeed satisfying things. However, if your dad happens to be the most popular drug lord in the world, perhaps it’s best not to use the location feature on your Twitter feed.
The location of the tweet was marked as “Costa Rica,” which could mean the country or the village of Costa Rica, Culiacan. This happens to be in Sinaloa, Mexico.
Was this a faux-pas or an attempt to throw the police off the scent? Or might it have been a deliberate flicking of the thumb from beneath the top teeth at authorities?
One opinion was offered to CNN by Phil Jordan, a 30-year DEA veteran: “One of the most intelligent traffickers has been Chapo. His son is not the brightest star on the Christmas tree. The best recorded intelligence on the son is that he doesn’t have his father’s intelligence. But I caution this could be a diversion to throw off authorities.”
Even the best recorded intelligence has, at times, proved to be bunkum intelligence.
Guzman Jr., or the account claiming to be him, did add another tweet on August 31. It read in translation: “I don’t want to say more, but even when the state buried God, we got ourselves out.”
The account has been retweeting posts about the photo to its more than 162,000 followers. However since August 31, no new tweet seems to have been penned. Perhaps Guzman Jr.’s been placed in solitary confinement, his phone taken away from him.
Or perhaps he’s gone underground.
