20 years ago, Will Smith punched an extraterrestrial directly in the face and a flying saucer blew up the White House. It’s quite possible Roland Emmerich’s 1996 film “Independence Day” was not a typical representation of the holiday.

Nevertheless, Emmerich is bringing those space invaders back in “Independence Day: Resurgence” and today, fans could catch the first trailer to the upcoming sequel.

“Resurgence” has set things up so it’s been close enough to 20 years since the events of the first film. Humanity has scavenged and appropriated whatever tech they could from the ’96 invasion. But now, in a twist that perhaps only studio execs saw coming, the Earth is about to be invaded again.

While Will Smith won’t be reprising his role as pugilistic welcoming committee, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Vivica A. Fox are all part of the returning cast. They’ll be joined in “Resurgence” by Liam Hemsworth (“The Hunger Games”), Joey King (“Fargo”) and William Fitchner (“The Dark Knight”).

Indulging in a spot of viral marketing, the trailer launched alongside a website titled The War of 1996. It cleverly fills in some of the blanks between “Independence Day” and “Resurgence,” offering up an alternate history from 1996 to the present day, and a few of the technological breakthroughs made by reverse-engineering the tech left behind by the alien invaders.

“Independence Day: Resurgence” will hit theatres on June 24, 2016. Check out the trailer below.
