The Martian, which opens wide this Friday, is a movie made for space nerds.

Not only does the film take place in a future where humans have landed on Mars, but it’s also a future in which NASA has enough funding to continue sending people to the red planet well into the 2030s

The movie — based on Andy Weir’s novel — follows the trials and tribulations of astronaut Mark Watney, a botanist who gets left behind on Mars after a dust storm scrubs NASA’s Ares 3 mission

The mission’s five other astronauts successfully launch out of the dust storm. But Watney, who was hit by debris during the tempest, has to figure out how to survive on a cold, dead world without any other humans around. Read more…
