It may not make for a great Martin Scorsese film, but online ad fraud is growing into one of the biggest organized crime businesses in the world.

That’s according to a new report from the World Federation of Advertisers, which estimates that fake Internet traffic schemes will become the second largest market for criminal organizations behind cocaine and opiate trafficking within the next decade.

The international marketing trade group arrived at that projection by taking various estimates of the current pace of growth in the shadowy industry and extrapolating them out over the next ten years, assuming an accelerating rate of spending on digital media. Read more…
