Apple Adds Jony Ive Collaborator Marc Newson to Its Design Team
Apple is adding another heavyweight industrial designer to its team, Jony Ive friend and collaborator Marc Newson, according to a new report.
On Friday, the Cupertino, Calif. company confirmed to Vanity Fair its addition of Newson.
Some of the design collaborations we may expect to see from Newson and Ive were on display last year when the two created a special edition Leica M camera and an aluminum desk for charity.
The auction, which raised over $26 million for the Global Fund to fight AIDS in Africa, also featured the duo’s customized pair of Apple earbuds and a red Mac Pro.
“Marc is without question one of the most influential designers of this generation,” Ive told Vanity Fair. “He is extraordinarily talented. We are particularly excited to formalize our collaboration, as we enjoy working together so much, and have found our partnership so effective.”
Newson will continue to work on other, non-Apple projects from his studio in the UK and make frequent visits to Apple’s Cupertino campus, according to the report. Newson’s official title will be senior vice president of design.
“I’m full of admiration and respect for the extraordinary design work that has been produced by Jony and the team at Apple,” Newson told the magazine. “My close friendship with Jony has not only given me a unique insight into that process, but the opportunity to work together with him and the people that have been responsible. I am enormously proud to join them.”
