Did you read Armada, the follow-up to Ernest Cline’s novel Ready Player One? It’s coming out in trade paperback form on April 12, in case that motivates you. To celebrate the release of this lighter, more portable edition, Cline’s having a good old-fashioned high-score contest: Play the web browser version of Phaëton, the faux-retro shooter game featured in the book, and you could win an Oculus Rift.

Since it’s unlikely that you personally will set the high score, I might also note that everyone who gets at least 525 points in the game will win “an embroidered Earth Defense Alliance patch.” Quite like what Activision used to do back in the day if you set a high score on one of its Atari 2600 titles. (Phaëton itself is of course a throwback reference—it’s an “urban legend” videogame similar to Polybius).

Topping it all off is this totally 80s “commercial” for Phaëton, featuring a Walkman, some leotards, and absolutely no sleeves. Sleeves went out with disco, man.
