At least 40 migrants suffocate aboard boat in the Mediterranean
KOS, Greece — The migrant crisis in Europe and the Mediterranean took deadly and violent turns on Saturday, as 40 migrants suffocated to death in the hold of a squalid wooden boat in the Mediterranean and dozens more quarreled on the Greek island of Kos.
The Italian rescue ship’s commander, Massimo Tozzi, told Rai News that those who perished appeared to have inhaled deadly exhaust fumes due to poor ventilation below deck. Some 320 migrants were rescued from the same unseaworthy vessel off the Libyan coast.
“It was a scene with a strong emotional impact,” Tozzi was quoted as saying. “There were several dead bodies submerged in water, fuel and human excrement.” Read more…
