Red Bull’s Cape Fear surfing contest kicked off in Sydney, Australia Monday after an insane storm lashed the east coast. While many Sydneysiders stayed in the confines of their warm homes, 16 surfers were towed into the wild ocean.

The big wave surfing competition — which has been in a waiting period since April — was finally given the green light on Monday.

Conditions at Cape Solander, known as Cape Fear, were deemed just right after an intense low pressure system moved down the east coast of Australia. The resulting storm destroying homes and took at least three lives. Read more…
