Doctor Who Season 9 Episode 11: “Heaven Sent”

There’s an old storytelling rule, that the best way to make your audience sympathize with your characters is to make the saddest thing possible happen to them. By that yardstick, the Doctor just became the most sympathetic character on television

Even if you’re new to the show, the amount of suffering Peter Capaldi goes through in “Heaven Sent” is almost unbearable. You think it hurts punching a wall? Try punching the hardest substance imaginable, over and over, for two billion years. In between each punch, you have to live in terror for days, spend time dying while clambering up a tall tower, and then start afresh with no memory of the horror that awaits. Read more…
