Early fantasy story by J.R.R. Tolkien will be published this fall

One of J.R.R. Tolkien‘s earliest pieces of writing — a twisted retelling of a classic Finnish poem titled The Story of Kullervo, is set to be published this year. The story will hit shelves in August 2015 in the U.K. and in late October in the U.S.
The Lord of the Rings author penned this early work while he was still a student at Oxford University’s Exeter College in 1915. The story is based on the poem “The Kalevala.”
The tragic tale follows a young man who endures great hardships — witnessing the death of his tribe, being sold into slavery, unknowingly seducing his sister — before he eventually commits suicide. Fans of Oedipus Rex should love it. Read more…
