Thousands poured into the streets of Brazil on Sunday in a series of nationwide rallies to protest President Dilma Rousseff and the ruling Workers Party. Many protesters called for the impeachment of Rousseff, whose approval rating has fallen to below 10% as the nation faces its largest economic slump in a quarter century

Protests occurred in 16 states and in the streets of large cities like Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paolo and Brasilia. In Rio de Janeiro, several thousand people, many brandishing green and yellow Brazilian flags, demonstrated along Copacabana Beach. The Rio demonstration was to coincide with a cycling test event for next year’s Olympic Games in the city, but organizers changed the route and timing of the sporting event to avoid a possible clash.
