Indie Spirit Awards honor black actors, first transgender woman
SANTA MONICA, Calif. — The Film Independent Spirit Awards did what the Oscars could not: Nominate, and then award, multiple actors of color for performances in 2015 films.
Three out of the four acting categories went to black actors on Saturday: Abraham Attah, the pre-teen star of Beasts of No Nation, for Best Male Lead; his co-star Idris Elba, for Best Supporting Male; and Mya Taylor, a transgender woman, for her supporting role in Tangerine.
Though Taylor was not the first transgender woman to be nominated for a Spirit Award, she was the first to win a major film award, period. Read more…
