Think facial hair has a pretty standard set of designs? Goatee, full beard, soul patch, maybe a Van Dyke? Think again, because the men who competed in the Just for Men National Beard and Moustache Championships in Nashville, Tennessee, earlier this month let things get a lot hairier than that.

Eighteen national championship titles, including awards for the Musketeer look, the famed Fu Manchu and the Amish beard, were handed out. Taylor Welden of Austin, Texas, took home first place in the Verdi beard category and also won the overall national championship.

Welden still seemed a little dazed by his win when posting the news to Instagram. “I was shocked with the 1st place ‘Verdi’ win and then was dumbfounded with the Best in Show award…which I figured I had zero chance of winning,” he wrote. “It was also an unspeakable honor to ‘perform’ at The Grand Ole Opry; the same stage where Elvis, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, and many other legends played. Super stoked. Party.”

Photographer Greg Anderson, who captured the contestants on film and shared the photos, wrote on Facebook that the competitors are “great guys, the whole lot of ’em.”
