Earlier this week, 4chan owner Hiroyuki Nishimura hit the forum site’s users with some jarring news.

The company is on the verge of financial ruin, he said, and keeping its servers and infrastructure afloat would take extreme measures.

“We had tried to keep 4chan as is. But I failed. I am sincerely sorry,” Nishimura wrote in a brief post entitled, “Winter is Coming.”

The three available cost-cutting options, as Nishimura sees it, are more abundant and aggressive — even “malicious” — pop-up ads, shuttering some of its dozens of board pages and limiting image upload size or roping more users into its paid “4chan pass” program, which unlocks extra features on the site.
