Japan’s largest active volcano, Mount Aso, erupted on Monday morning, sending up ash and smoke 1,000m into the air.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency released a screengrab of a surveillance video showing a column of black smoke rising out of the volcano in the Kumamoto prefecture.
