Directors of videos nominated for the MTV Video Music Awards are required to pay hundreds of dollars for a seat if they want to attend the ceremony, Mashable has confirmed

Only the eight directors who earned a nod in the Best Direction category were given free access to the Aug. 30 event at Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

MTV declined to provide an official comment about the policy, but the issue has created controversial buzz after Josh Forbes, who directed Walk The Moon’s “Shut Up and Dance,” launched a crowdfunding effort to help him buy his way into the VMAs.
