The 2015 NFL season is still weeks away, but the New York Jets have already suffered their first major loss.

Quarterback Geno Smith was “sucker-punched” by linebacker and (now former) teammate Ikemefuna “I.K.” Enemkpali during a locker room spat, the team confirms. The attack left Smith with a broken jaw that will require surgery, along with six to 10 weeks of downtime while he heals. The team released Enemkpali following the incident.

Head coach Todd Bowles said that the disagreement “had nothing to do with football” and involved “something very childish,” reports the New York Daily News. Read more…
