At least 26 bodies have been recovered from El Cambray Dos, a village 9 miles from Guatemala’s capital, after a mudslide Thursday evening.

As many as 600 could be missing, said Alejandro Maldonado, the head of the Guatemalan disaster agency. Relatives say they are receiving calls and texts from people trapped under the rubble, the BBC reports

Hundreds of rescuers used shovels and pickaxes in a frantic effort to rescue survivors Friday. The search had to be called off late Friday to early Saturday because of rain. One man was pulled out 15 hours after the mudslide
