As the same-sex marriage debate rages in Australia, a documentary featuring the lives of kids with same-sex parents has been banned in some schools during school hours.

The crowdfunded film Gayby Baby was scheduled to be screened at Burwood High School in Sydney for Wear It Purple Day on Friday, which is an initiative to support LGBTI rights. Instead, the New South Wales state government urged schools to not show the documentary during school hours, if it is not within the planned curriculum.

The Australian film tells an intimate story about the lives of four children with same-sex parents. It has been screened at film festivals in the country and recently had its world premiere at the Hot Docs Film Festival in Toronto. Read more…
