A rare cosmic coincidence is happening Sunday in dark skies around the world, and you won’t need any special equipment to see it

The moon will be at its closest point to Earth in its orbit as it is fully enveloped in Earth’s shadow, making it a supermoon total lunar eclipse — a celestial event that hasn’t happened since 1982 and won’t happen again until 2033.

The moon will likely shine with a ghostly red pallor, leading some to call it a “super blood moon,” during the total phase of the eclipse because of sunlight refracted through Earth’s atmosphere and onto the lunar surface. Read more…
