The LaCie Chrome desktop drive blends eye-popping style with a jaw-dropping price – CNET
Depending on how you look at it, the LaCie Chrome is either high-end desktop art for the aspirational classes or a triumph of form over function. Maybe it’s both.
The eye-catching desktop solid state drive is made from solid chromed zinc and attaches to the base via neodymium magnets. The enclosure is hand assembled aluminium with a mirror finish. It’s also available now for a not-insignificant $1,499 or AU$2,399 (around £1,035).
At lot of that price tag can be attributed to the designer, Neil Poulton, who has been working withand has won more awards than most designers could imagine. And yes, the Chrome picked up a Red Dot Design award earlier this year.
According to LaCie: “The elevated form is an homage to a 1935 bronze statue from Constantin Brâncuși, one of the most influential sculptors of the 20th century.”
Of course there’s some quality tech inside as well, with dual 500GB SSDs to give you high speed access to your data via USB-C. (You can also connect via regular USB it’s just a little slower.)
But at the end of the day, you’re paying for the style and the bragging rights when people comment on your incredible eye for office aesthetics.
