Everything about Monday night’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer was unprecedented. Not only was the screening trumpeted far and wide instead of simply dropped on an unsuspecting public (like the previous two Force Awakens trailers), it also came wrapped in so much hype that one would think the movie itself was premiering

So the trailer’s first job was to justify the hype. It had to make all the fans scrambling to buy tickets on Fandango glad that they were constantly hitting refresh. It had to make millions of nerds pleased that they’d just watched an hour and a half of football. And it had to reveal something, anything, about the famous Star Wars faces mysteriously absent from the first two trailers: Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia. Read more…
