In Whiskey Tango Foxtrot Tina Fey revamps her old “Weekend Update” newscaster persona to play an actual TV war correspondent in Afghanistan. Based on Kim Barker’s memoir The Taliban Shuffle, the movie does something that a lot of folks would be afraid to try: find comedy in a drawn-out intractable war. It could have easily backfired, but in Fey’s hands (and those of writer Robert Carlock) the jokes land alongside the bombs. That’s not to say Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is without flaws. Coming as it does in the midst of loud cries for more diversity in Hollywood, it unfortunately has at least two Afghan characters played by non-Afghan actors (one being Christopher Abbott, whose last major role was literally James White in James White). But if you can cringe past that, you’ll see Whiskey Tango Foxtrot is doing the best it can. And its best ain’t bad. Check out the WIRED video review of Whiskey Tango Foxtrot above.
