Former college football superstar and NFL running back Lawrence Phillips died early Wednesday at age 40 after being found unresponsive in his prison cell. The case is a suspected suicide

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced Phillips’ death Wednesday morning. Phillips was among the biggest football stars of the early ’90s as a running back for the University of Nebraska, but the personal problems that plagued his college career ultimately derailed his NFL career as well

Kern Valley State Prison staff conducting security checks found Phillips unresponsive in his cell at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday, according to prison officials. He was pronounced dead at 1:27 a.m. after being moved to an external hospital. Read more…
