Oakland-based musician Fantastic Negrito had an eventful year. He won the NPR Tiny Desk Concert contest out of more than 7,000 entries, endured a kerfuffle at Outside Lands that led to an unplanned set cancellation and subsequent free concert at San Francisco concert venue The Independent, and even provided the theme music to Amazon’s original series Hand of God, which was recently renewed for a second season. So we invited FN, aka Xavier Dphrepalezz, to record a song live in our San Francisco office. He showed up with nothing but a guitar and a raconteur’s spirit, engaging everyone from WIRED who turned out to watch. It’s a miniature version of what he accomplishes live, whipping packed crowds into a frenzy—despite his insistence that he’s nervous every time right before he goes onstage. He’s a natural performer, and looks right at home playing live music again after years away from the industry.
