Watch Samsung Torture Its Galaxy Note 4 in Extensive Drop Test
Nobody wants to drop their smartphone (and potentially throw a few hundred dollars down the drain), but it can happen — no matter how careful you are.
To ensure the damage is minimal, manufacturers perform rigorous drop tests on their devices. For its part, Samsung recently released a video showing the torture its Galaxy Note 4 undergoes before reaching consumers’ hands.
In the video, above, we see a poor Note 4 being dropped from various heights onto a granite floor — a test that it seems to pass easily.
The device is also repeatedly dropped onto a hard metal floor at random angles, and from various heights, several hundred times.
Perhaps the most grueling is the “tumble test,” in which the Note 4 is placed into a tumbling box, simulating a fall down the stairs. In the video, we see the smartphone being compared to a soda can, which looks pretty beat up after 14 “falls,” whereas the Note 4 looks as good as new.
Of course, this doesn’t mean every device will withstand such punishment every single time. The video just provides insight into some of the measures Samsung takes to ensure its phones can take a hit or two, and stay in working condition.
Recently, Apple also provided some details from its own stress-testing process for the iPhone 6. In some third-party drop tests, however, the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus fared fine, but were far from perfect.
